Tower Level Milestones
The Legend of William OhTower Level Milestones are the progression gates through which The System converts survival and combat into concrete opportunities for character development. They do more than record experience: they alter what a Climber can choose, shape Build decisions, and turn each ascent into both a spatial and mechanical advance.
Definition and Operation
The milestones operate through level-based unlocks. When Will reaches level 5 after completing his first Establishing Quest, The System immediately assigns him a new objective: “Ascend to the 2nd Floor.” The same notification congratulates him on reaching level five and places him at rank 1053rd among that year’s Aspirants, linking personal advancement to institutional comparison. Level 5 therefore functions not only as an experience marker but also as a public measure of performance and a trigger for the next stage of progression.
The evidence also establishes a more consequential threshold at level 10. After Will reaches the “magical level 10” in Oilton, The System gives him the option to select a Secondary Ability and provides another Primary Ability upgrade slot. The threshold changes the range of viable character development rather than merely increasing a number on a status display.
Will’s Milestones
Will’s progression shows how the rule intersects with physical danger and recovery. After the events in which he is left battered and Brianna is dropped into the ash, he is identified as a level 11 Resourceful Climber. At that point, the System lists his Primary Abilities as Aspect of the Goat and Phantom Hand, while also announcing two Ability Upgrade opportunities and one Secondary Ability opportunity. The level 11 display is thus the visible result of earlier risks and the formal confirmation that he has crossed the level 10 development gate.
The timing matters because Will does not treat the new options as interchangeable rewards. He considers choosing a direct-damage Ability after remembering how effectively Loth’s attack destroyed an opponent, then rejects the impulse to copy it blindly. Will recognizes that Loth’s attack belongs to a Build Loth is deliberately completing and is suited to Loth’s own strengths. The milestone expands Will’s choices, but it does not decide his Build for him; progression creates a strategic problem as well as a reward.
Milestones and the Climb
The level system is tied to The Tower’s floor structure. Will’s level-five notification follows his first Establishing Quest and immediately points toward the 2nd Floor, while later planning shows that he and Loth consider gaining levels before attempting the 3rd Floor. They are still acclimating and conclude that additional grinding is preferable to an underprepared ascent.
The fastest route upward is to follow a Bus and help clear a Key Site. The rules allow Climbers to participate in the wake of another group’s advance as long as they are present and do not actively sabotage the other Climbers. Yet Loth warns that entering a higher Floor below the maximum level permitted for the current Floor would be foolish, even if the Bus makes the route available. This contrast separates formal access from practical readiness: a milestone may open the next objective, but survival still depends on levels, acclimation, and judgment.
Progression Under Constraint
The System’s advancement structure is not a simple reward machine. Before Will can acquire a Class, a thumb-sized piece of pemmican is placed on an Altar in the Class Creation Room; a beam of light consumes it, and the System reports that the sacrifice is suboptimal and fails to generate a Class Seed. Later, Will receives the prompt to choose his Primary Abilities and pauses to study the Resourceful Climber Class before making a selection. These moments show the wider progression logic in which advancement depends on prerequisites, choices, and the interpretation of available options.
The physical spaces of progression are equally restrictive. The Class Creation Room is a plain white room containing three Altars and no exit, a sealed box whose walls resist even the force of an Aspirant using Relic weapons. Will’s later acceptance of a quest opens an interdimensional doorway, but he is warned to do so outside Leon’s shop because the doorway could damage the floor or return him wounded and filthy. Progress therefore occurs through controlled thresholds: the System offers advancement, but each threshold can also confine, expose, or endanger the person attempting to cross it.
Narrative Significance
Tower Level Milestones provide the book’s game-like progression with dramatic consequences. Level 5 turns a completed Establishing Quest into a new upward demand and a comparative ranking; level 10 turns accumulated experience into a wider Ability architecture; level 11 confirms that Will has survived enough danger to receive multiple upgrades. The milestones make growth legible while preserving uncertainty about how that growth should be used.
Their deeper significance lies in the tension between numerical advancement and practical competence. Will can gain levels, select abilities, and pursue the next Floor, but the Tower remains governed by hostile spaces, limited resources, acclimation requirements, and the danger of following a faster group before he is ready. The milestone promises possibility rather than safety. It is the System’s clearest form of progress, but every new level also raises the question of whether a Climber understands the rules well enough to survive what the next threshold demands.
